Recently, 11 e-bike brands – including Giant, Brompton, and Basis – have been successfully included in the Bicycle Association (BA) Safety Registry, establishing a key benchmark for the safe development of the e-bike industry.
These 11 well-known e-bike brands, having passed rigorous quality and regulatory reviews, have been publicly added to the BA E-bike Safety Registry for the first time.
The first batch of brands included are: Basis, Brompton Electric, Dallingridge, Emu, Genesis, Giant, Liv, Momentum, Ridgeback, Saracen, and Whyte.
The review, conducted by the UK’s Bicycle Association (BA, a certification body), aims to verify three key points: whether the brands’ e-bikes have undergone comprehensive safety testing, comply with relevant international standards, and are legally roadworthy in the UK as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). Additionally, the review also rigorously assesses the brands’ robust business practices, covering areas like quality management, battery handling, and storage protocols.
The release of this first batch of certified e-bike brands carries significant meaning. When serious safety incidents occur due to substandard or non-road-compliant products, mainstream media can clearly distinguish these problematic items from legitimate e-bikes.
Government guidance, along with a growing number of media reports, urges consumers to buy reputable e-bikes solely from trusted retailers.
The Bicycle Association (BA) noted that this registry offers an excellent opportunity for legitimate e-bike suppliers – including both brands and retailers. It allows them to reassure consumers that their safe, fully road-legal products are in no way comparable to dangerous e-bikes, modification kits, or components (mostly sourced from online platforms) – the latter being the primary cause of frequently reported negative incidents.
With this reliable registry, the government, insurance companies, and media can all refer consumers to this list, helping them choose safe, legal e-bikes. For retailers, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), with support from the Bicycle Association (BA), has recognized approximately 400 “E-bike Positive” retailers – businesses committed to upholding best practices in e-bike retail and services. Reports indicate that these two industry bodies (the BA and ACT-related organizations) plan to collaborate on launching a high-visibility initiative early next year to align these two programs.
Additionally, the Bicycle Association (BA) revealed it is engaging with the insurance industry to secure its support and explore practical solutions – such as easing blanket bans on e-bikes in workplaces or residential areas.
